100 Years of Dental Innovations/100th Dental Blog Post Celebration!

To celebrate our Riverside, California Biological Dental Blog’s 100th post I am going to reveal what I think are the top dental innovations in the past 100 years.

1903- The first porcelain crown was invented by Charles Land

1905- A German Chemist introduced Novocain anesthetic.

1938- First synthetic nylon bristle toothbrush on the market.

1939- First electric toothbrush developed in Switzerland.  GE introduced the first rechargeable toothbrush in 1961.

1957- French dentist Bourdet introduced his knowledge in a book on tooth alignment and appliances with orthodontics.

1957- First high speed hand drill for dentistry.

1960- First dental laser developed to work on soft tissue procedures.

1982- Dental implants deemed safe.

1997- Invisalign Braces were invented.

1990’s- Composite white resin material improved to handle the pressure of the molar teeth.

1990’s- beginning of cosmetic dentistry era…veneers, bleaching, and dental implants gain popularity.

2000’s- Mercury controversy begins; research on its toxicity to the body

Fluoride controversy….research shows it is not effective at preventing tooth decay.

2000’s- Medical industry finally agrees that oral health is directly linked to total body heath.
