Men Smiling vs. Women Smiling-Is there a difference?

When it comes to the smile, many studies reveal that women smile more often then men on a daily basis.  A few of the studies pinpoint adolescence as the marker for when this phenomena occurs.  Other studies mainly focus on the cultural aspects of men smiling.  What I find interesting is that before the age of 9, children are constantly learning from society gender roles.  By the age of 9, research shows that gills have learned the value in smiling and looking good at an event like yearbook picture day.  Boys on the other hand, by this age have learned that  their gender role of masculinity is to be of a more serious nature and avoid the smile.  Although society has evolved, this society taught gender role still remains true as decades of studies have been done.

Due to men learning the gender role of masculinity early in development, this behavior stays with them through a lifetime.  Also, men are not as socially observant as women in regards to knowing they are being observed by another person.  Women on the other hand are extremely observant by those who surround them.  Women also carry with them from early development that appearance is important, which leads to more cosmetic procedures throughout their lifetime.  Thus, women are more likely then men to express their desire for an attractive and healthy smile.
