DIAGNOdent Laser Dentistry Inland Empire Dentist Explains:

Posted September 2, 2011 in Home

The DIAGNOdent dental laser is an extremely useful tool when it comes to the detection of tooth decay.  My Inland Empire Biological Cosmetic dental office utilizes this innovative technology to inspect each tooth, ensuring the integrity of the enamel.  The laser uncovers tooth decay with accuracy and efficiency by measuring the density of the enamel.  From a technical standpoint, the laser compares the wavelength of a healthy enamel baseline to the area of suspicion.

As a biological dentist focused on tooth preservation and patient care, the DIAGNOdent laser allows for conservative treatment of tooth decay.  Early detection results in minimal tooth removal during time of treatment.  With minimal tooth structure removal, in most cases the area treated will not have to be anesthetized.  Thus, patients do not leave our office feeling numb and can go about their day with ease.

Here is great video courtesy of YouTube for visualization of how the DIAGNOdent works:

Unveiling the Hidden Dangers in Toothpaste:

Posted August 28, 2011 in Home

The majority of consumers purchase personal hygiene product without reading the list of ingredients, instead they put their trust into the clever marketing of these products.  One heavily marketed consumer product that contains multiple dangerous ingredients is toothpaste.  Yes that’s right…toothpaste!

What is shocking to me is that with the following list of toxic ingredients in toothpaste, the FDA and American Dental Association (ADA) continue to promote it as being healthy and safe.  So, for this blog I am going to list the ingredients that are toxic and let you as the reader decide on whether it is in your health’s best interest to continue using the toothpastes containing these harmful ingredients.

Toxic Ingredients in Toothpaste:

Sodium Fluoride: The truth behind fluoride is that it is a toxin, just read the warning signs on your toothpaste.  It says “if ingested call poison control.”  Sodium fluoride is a by-product of aluminum manufacturing and can be found in pesticides.  Finally, fluoride can no longer keep its claim as preventing tooth decay, rather research has proven that decreasing acidity in the mouth prevents tooth decay.

Triclosan:  Is most often found in in anti-bacterial products, however Triclosan can be found in certain mainstream brands of toothpaste.  It is considered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a pesticide and harmful to humans and the environment.  It is a potential cancer causing toxin due to its chemical nature.

Propylene Glycol: Is used as a surfactant “wetting” agent in toothpaste.  The safety data sheets on this toxin states that it can be rapidly absorbed through the skin, and long exposure can lead to brain, liver and kidney dysfunction.  Interestingly, this chemical cannot be handled without precautions of wearing rubber gloves, yet it is placed in the majority of toothpastes on the shelf.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate:  Is an ingredient in many hygiene products as a detergent and cleansing agent.  It has various health risks, which include damage to the eyes, irritate skin, and lead to difficulty with breathing.  The American College of Toxicology reports that it can stay in the body up to 5 days, leading to accumulation in the heart, liver, lungs, and brain.  When combined with other chemicals in the body, it transforms into a powerful carcinogen which is cancer-causing.

In order to avoid these toxic substances, take a minute to review the labels on the products you purchase.  Also, when it comes to toothpaste; avoid these substances by purchasing toothpaste containing natural ingredients including Xylitol.

Men Smiling vs. Women Smiling-Is there a difference?

Posted August 28, 2011 in Home

When it comes to the smile, many studies reveal that women smile more often then men on a daily basis.  A few of the studies pinpoint adolescence as the marker for when this phenomena occurs.  Other studies mainly focus on the cultural aspects of men smiling.  What I find interesting is that before the age of 9, children are constantly learning from society gender roles.  By the age of 9, research shows that gills have learned the value in smiling and looking good at an event like yearbook picture day.  Boys on the other hand, by this age have learned that  their gender role of masculinity is to be of a more serious nature and avoid the smile.  Although society has evolved, this society taught gender role still remains true as decades of studies have been done.

Due to men learning the gender role of masculinity early in development, this behavior stays with them through a lifetime.  Also, men are not as socially observant as women in regards to knowing they are being observed by another person.  Women on the other hand are extremely observant by those who surround them.  Women also carry with them from early development that appearance is important, which leads to more cosmetic procedures throughout their lifetime.  Thus, women are more likely then men to express their desire for an attractive and healthy smile.

Our Riverside Cosmetic Biological Dental office utilizes the latest in dental technology and research to help our patients achieve their goals of creating a natural-looking smile.  With providing a variety of cosmetic dental services, ranging from porcelain veneers, dental implants, and cosmetic rehabilitation it is simple to create a picture-perfect smile.  More important, our dental team creates a safe and caring environment for each patient to share their story and express their goals for achieving the smile they have always dreamed of.  If you are in search of finding a dental home for your cosmetic dental needs please visit our office located in just off of the 91 freeway in Riverside, California (951)686-3666.

Inland Empire Holistic and Cosmetic Dentist Explains Gingivitis:

Posted August 22, 2011 in Home

Gingivitis simply is inflammation of the gum tissue that surrounds the teeth.  In order to describe unhealthy gum tissue, I must first describe what healthy gingiva (gum tissue)  looks like in the mouth.  Gum tissue that is healthy is  tight to the teeth and pale pink in color (depending on ethnicity).  Healthy tissue does not bleed when brushing, flossing, or when the teeth are being cleansed professionally by a dental hygienist.

Gingivitis is in most cases caused by lack of oral hygiene home care which leads to excessive bacteria and plaque build-up.  Gingivitis appears in the gum tissue as red to blue in color, swollen, tender to the touch, and bleeding occurs.  Bleeding in the mouth is one of the few markers for gum infection that is active.  Over time, gingivitis can turn into periodontal disease which leads to bone loss and tooth loss.

The treatment of gingivitis is extremely important as to rid the mouth and the body of infection.  Here at my Holistic Cosmetic dental office, we utilize technology such as lasers to disinfect the gum tissue during dental hygiene cleanings.  My team of experienced dental hygienists also routinely recommend the Sonicare toothbrush as a dental tool to be used at home.  Along with an at home dental tool, specific toothpastes and mouth rinses are also recommended.  Natural supplements and vitamins may also be recommended depending on the severity of the gingivitis.  Various oral home care techniques are also shown which are specific to each patient.

As more and more studies reveal, the plaque left on the teeth with gingivitis is directly linked to many health complications such as heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.  It is of utmost importance to our dental team that gingivitis be treated in a natural and swift manner, as to protect the health of the body and mouth.  If you are suffering from sore gums, bleeding gums, swollen gums, please call our Inland Empire Holistic dental office at (951)686-3666.

A Bioidentical and Non-Surgical Approach to Treating Periodontal Disease:

Posted August 21, 2011 in Home

When it comes to treating periodontal (gum) disease, the traditional treatment method has always been a surgical approach.  Traditional gum surgery is often referred to as “flap” surgery because the gum tissue is cut and pushed back allowing the Periodontist (gum specialist) to remove debris and place new bone in the infected areas.  This procedure is extremely beneficial in the fight against gum disease, however with this surgery gum tissue loss occurs.  Once the surgery is complete the end result  can lead to longer appearing teeth along with tooth sensitivity.  With that said; in this blog I am going to discuss the non-surgical approach my Inland Empire Biological Dental Laser specialty office uses when treating periodontal disease.

The non-surgical approach to treat gum disease is called the LANAP procedure.  Instead of using scalpels and sutures, this non-surgical method uses a periodontal laser.  The laser disinfects the gum tissue clearing it of debris, disinfects the areas treated, and most importantly stimulates new bone to grow.  The Laser is used in stages during this appointment to remove diseased tissue in the periodontal pockets and to disinfect, then electric scalers and hand scalers are used to remove debris, and finally the laser is used again to eliminate any remaining bacteria and to form a blood clot.  This blood clot is essential for healing the infected tissue and stimulating bone tissue to grow.  The LANAP laser is the only FDA approved laser for the treatment of periodontal disease.

The “down time” for the LANAP procedure is minimal and does not require any sutures.  It requires a minimum of two 2 hour appointments along with a few additional visits.  Post surgery all that is required is to adapt to a soft food diet.  Finally, the LANAP procedure is safe for patients with health concerns like; diabetes, high blood pressure, blood thinner medication.
