As our children’s bodies grow and change their jaw joint and teeth grow with the same swiftness. More often than not many parents observe their children grinding their teeth while sleeping. Although it is common knowledge that grinding otherwise known as Bruxism can cause many problems with the chewing system in adults, this is typically not the case for our children. On average 3 out of 10 children will clench or grind their teeth, however most will outgrow it.
Causes of Bruxism/Clenching in Children:
There has been research on potential causes of childhood clenching and grinding, however there have been no definitive findings. Many dental professionals believe that children grind their teeth as a response to the top and bottom teeth not being aligned properly. The mis alignment from the baby and the new adult teeth coming in is said to be another cause of grinding. Stress, anger, and nervous tension also have the ability to provoke grinding and clenching. In addition, children that are hyperactive also experience clenching and grinding.
Effects of Bruxism/Clenching in Children:
Most often children outgrow this condition without causing damage to their teeth. Some children however experience headaches and earaches as a result of their bruxism. In some instances, bruxism can cause excessive tooth wear, chipped teeth, and TMJ problems.

The use of dentures to replace missing teeth used to be the only option when it came to providing a chewing structure to those who had little to no teeth. Now we know that when teeth are removed from the mouth 50% of the bone is lost in the area of the missing teeth. Also, the adjacent teeth also begin to loose bone over time. We also know the long term affects of missing teeth and dentures results in facial distortion and overall bone loss in the jaw bone. Overtime, the dentures begin to loosen because of the bone loss. This can lead to frustration and embarrassment for the denture patient as they experience the denture slipping while eating, tissue irritation, and the denture “popping”out of the mouth while talking.
If you or someone you know is experiencing “loose” or ill-fitting dentures, my Riverside Biological Dental Implant office has the answer for you. We have successfully treated many patients with these conditions and provided stable dentures with the use of dental implants. Dental implants have the ability to create stability with dentures. Dental implants support dentures by providing attachments for the denture to anchor on to. A new denture is made to match the attachments where the dental implants have been placed in the jaw bone. The denture can still be removed at night or during the day to allow for the oral tissue to “breathe” as well as to brush and soak the denture in a cleansing solution. Finally, it is important to gently brush and floss around the dental implants to prevent gum infection. Implant supported dentures are a welcome relief to those individuals who have been suffering for years with a denture that is ill-fitting. Below is an animation on how implants are used in the implant supported denture. Please call our Riverside Dental Implant and Cosmetic Dental office at (951)686-3666 to schedule a consultation for your ill-fitting denture. I am confident that we will surpass your expectations and that you will be eating your favorite foods again
Are you missing teeth and wanting to have a functional and healthy mouth? Or, have you been told that teeth need to be removed from your mouth and are wondering what to do? Or perhaps you have had teeth removed for health reasons and are looking for dental materials that are compatible with your body? In this blog I am going to discuss the various options that are available when it comes to replacing missing teeth.
As a member or the IAOMT, I am a dentist that is focused in utilizing a biological and more holistic approach when it comes to cosmetic dentistry. My Inland Empire BioIdentical Cosmetic dental office offers ways to evaluate what dental materials are best suited for your body. This is important for many individuals, especially those with compromised immune systems. This information allows me to determine whether a fixed bridge or implant would be best for your body.
Fixed bridge vs. Implant:
Here is a great animated video that visually shows the difference between a fixed bridge and dental implant:
A fixed bridge for many decades was the only option for providing function where a tooth was missing. A fixed bridge is a procedure where each tooth adjacent to the missing tooth is “shaved down” in order to prepare it for a crown. The final bridge includes 3 teeth; a crown for each prepared tooth that serve as “anchors” for the fake tooth placed in the middle. It is permanently cemented on the teeth and typically lasts around 10 -15 years. However overtime, the bone surrounding the area is weakened due to the previous loss of tooth and extra stress on each adjacent tooth. This can lead to further bone destruction or eventual tooth loss over a long period of time. A fixed bridge is still a great option for individuals, however it greatly depends on the area of the bridge, expected tooth longevity etc.
An implant is a newer technology that provides ideal chewing function without damaging the adjacent teeth surrounding the missing tooth. The placement of a dental implant in a missing tooth area “mimics” the missing tooth, thus bone loss is not typically an issue. A dental implant does however need sufficient bone in the area where it is to be placed. The dental implant is placed into the “jaw bone” area with ease and left to integrate with the jaw bone for approximately 3-6 months. Once the X-ray shows that the bone has surrounded the implant, then the final implant crown is made. Implants typically will last a life time, and are a better option for those who are wanting a more long lasting option for replacing their missing teeth. Another benefit of an implant is that it is easy to clean and floss around, just like your normal teeth.

We have come a long way in the dental profession when it comes to how we repair fillings and remove cavities. Dentists used to remove a much more significant amount of tooth structure in preparation for a filling, however now we know that this is not an ideal approach. The newer approach when placing fillings is to remove as little tooth structure as possible, causing minimal trauma to the tooth itself. With less trauma comes a lesser of a chance for a root canal to occur. The following link is a demonstration of the Waterlase laser technology on the T.V. show The Doctors.
As a dentist trained in the Waterlase drill-less dentistry technique; I am able to precisely remove cavities with minimal tooth structure lost. This high-tech machine also allows me to provide pain-free and injection-free way to treat my patients’. It is wonderful for patients’ to be able to leave my Riverside BioIdentical and Cosmetic Dental office without being numb, so that they can carry on with their daily tasks. it is also a much better option when removing cavities from children. The children in our dental practice are able to enjoy each dental visit as they know that they will not have to have “numbing juice.”
Along with using the latest in dental technology, my BioIdentical dental office only uses materials that are safe and compatible with our bodies. It is our goal to be able to serve our patients’ with the utmost care for their dental health along with total body wellness. Fluoride has been a subject of controversy for many years, it is added to our drinking water, it is in most of our toothpastes and mouth rinses, we rinse with it at the dentist office, and most pediatricians and dentists use it as a gold standard for the prevention of tooth decay. Fluoride has been added to our drinking water for many decades with the premise of reducing tooth decay. However, very few studies were conducted on the toxic effects of fluoride on animals and on human tissue. Interestingly, our government has allowed water fluoridation regardless of the facts and data they have received in regards to fluorides harmful effects.
Simply, fluoride is a very strong toxin which DOES NOT prevent tooth decay. As a member of the I.A.O.M.T., mounds of research articles affirm that fluoride is not what prevents tooth decay. Rather, it is the acid-producing bacteria that cause tooth decay therefore decreasing the acid prevents tooth decay.
So why are we continually adding it to our drinking water when research has proven that fluoride is toxic and dangerous? There has definitely been a disconnect between the medical and dental community when it comes to truly researching the benefits and health risks when it comes to fluoride. So for now, it is up to us as consumers to be aware of the dangers ourselves and our families are being exposed to on a daily basis. My Bioidentical Cosmetic Dental office does not promote fluoride use in any mouthwash or toothpaste. Instead, we focus on reducing/inhibiting the acid-releasing bacteria to prevent tooth decay.
How is fluoride toxic to our system?
Fluoride changes the enzymes in our body, which are the building blocks of our cells. Over time genetic mutations occur causing permanent damage virtually all of the systems in the body. Damage can occur to the following systems: immune system, digestive system, respiratory system, kidney function, blood circulation, brain function, liver function, and thyroid function.
