What Is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dentistry procedure that aims to lighten the color of the teeth by removing stains and discoloration, resulting in whiter teeth and a brighter smile.

There are many ways to whiten the teeth, but the process usually involves the use of a whitening solution containing hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These chemical compounds penetrate the tooth enamel to break down deeper stains, effectively altering the chemical structure of the stain and bleaching it to a lighter color, several shades whiter than you started with.

Teeth whitening can be done in the office or at home, depending on patient goals, tooth sensitivity, and the starting condition of the teeth. The results will vary depending on individual oral health and the type of treatment used.

Whether you choose an in-office professional teeth whitening treatment or go with an at-home kit, the goal is a sparkling smile that boosts your confidence.

Teeth Whitening Options

Bleaching

The process of bleaching reverses the discoloration of enamel. Bleaching uses hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide to break down stains, making their color less concentrated. This process leaves your teeth looking whiter and brighter.

At-Home Whitening

At-home whitening allows you to bleach your teeth in privacy. At IE Dental, we offer the GLO Science So Brilliant™ Teeth Whitening System, which can make your teeth up to 10 shades whiter in the comfort of your own home. This system’s specially patented mouthpiece uses light and gentle heat to activate its special gel formula. The GLO Science at-home teeth whitening regimen consists of three consecutive 8-minute sessions, five days in a row, with monthly touch-up sessions recommended.

In-Office Whitening

In-office, dentist-supervised teeth whitening using the GLO Science So Brilliant™ Teeth Whitening System provides a more powerful experience. A thin layer of chemically activated whitening gel is applied to your teeth by your dentist, and the gentle illuminating mouthpiece is inserted to begin your treatment. The whitening process consists of three consecutive 8-minute sessions, which your dentist will supervise. You will then be able to take the GLO Science whitening kit home to continue treatment. Most patients continue their at-home treatment for five days for noticeable results.

What Can I Expect During an In-office Teeth Whitening Visit?

It all starts with a consultation. Dr. Tomazin will evaluate your teeth and discuss your history of tooth sensitivity to determine which whitening treatment option is best suited for you. Photos may be taken for comparison before and after treatment, or a shade-matching tool may be used for reference.

Treatment begins with a cleaning to polish your teeth and remove plaque and tartar. Then, a gel, dam, or gauze will be applied to your gums to protect them from the chemicals in the whitening agent. A whitening gel is then applied to the teeth. Depending on the solution applied, a curing light may be used to activate the gel.

Patients often read, watch movies, or listen to music during their whitening treatment. When treatment has reached the recommended time for desired results, Dr. Tomazin will rinse the solution off your teeth.

You will be provided with aftercare instructions, including staining food and drinks to avoid for the next 24 hours.

Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

When done correctly and under the careful guidance of a dental professional, teeth whitening is generally considered to be safe. However, as with any cosmetic dental treatment, there are potential risks and side effects.

Tooth sensitivity is a common side effect of teeth whitening. For most patients, this is temporary and can be managed with desensitizing toothpaste or other treatments.

Teeth whitening may exacerbate gum disease and tooth decay if the patient does not maintain proper oral hygiene. Therefore, it is essential to follow the instructions provided by your dentist and maintain good oral hygiene and health habits to ensure the safety and efficacy of your teeth whitening treatment. Doing this will ensure you enjoy a whiter smile without compromising your dental health.

Teeth Whitening for Sensitive Teeth

Patients with sensitive teeth are often concerned about the potential discomfort posed by teeth whitening. However, there are options available for those with sensitive teeth. Dr. Tomazin can recommend a whitening solution that is specially formulated for sensitive teeth.

Another option that works for some patients is using a desensitizing toothpaste before and after your whitening appointment. Some teeth-whitening products contain ingredients like potassium nitrate or strontium chloride, which have both been shown to reduce tooth sensitivity.

It’s important to consult with a qualified dentist to determine the best course of treatment for your sensitive teeth. With the right approach, you can enjoy a brighter smile without the hassle of increased sensitivity.

Teeth Whitening Cost

The cost of teeth whitening in the Inland Empire can vary widely, depending on the type of treatment, the location, and the expertise of your dentist.

At your consultation, Dr. Tomazin can provide you with detailed pricing information and help you determine the best treatment options for your budget and dental needs.

Keep in mind that white teeth can have a lasting impact on your confidence and overall oral health upkeep. Many patients find that investing in beautiful teeth not only enhances their appearance but boosts their self-esteem and inspires them to maintain good dental health habits, making it a worthwhile decision in the long run.
